If elected, the top law enforcement officer in Michigan could be serving time in prison, convicted of tampering with voting machines

ANSING – Radical Republican and conspiracy theorist Matt DePerno is running to be Michigan’s Attorney General, ultimately the top cop in the state, while also under criminal investigation for his alleged role in an illegal scheme to tamper with voting machines.

“Election denier Matt DePerno has become a national laughingstock for illegal and unethical conduct and fringe, democracy-destroying views,” said Lavora Barnes, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party. “He is completely unqualified to hold any public office.”

DePerno has a record of extremist claims that clearly shows he is too radical to be the top law enforcement officer in the state. A Top 10 list of the reasons DePerno is unfit for office:

  1. DePerno is under criminal investigation for allegations he played a prominent role in the illegal plot to obtain and alter voting tabulators used in the 2020 election.
  2. He even bragged about getting access to a voter tabulator, all part of a debunked conspiracy theory to show the votes recorded by the machines could be manipulated.
  3. Illegally obtaining a voting machine is a felony that carries a maximum five-year prison sentence, which – if DePerno is convicted and elected – would mean he could face time behind bars while serving as Michigan’s top law enforcement officer.
  4. He was among the radical conspiracy theorists who met on Jan. 6, 2021, with members of former President Donald Trump’s administration to devise a plan aimed at overturning the results of the 2020 election that Trump lost to President Joe Biden.
  5. DePerno supports a restrictive ban on abortion without exceptions, including situations that involve the life of the mother as well as cases of rape and incest.
  6. He also thinks Plan B should be banned, even saying: “You have to stop it at the border. It would be no different than fentanyl.”
  7. DePerno was fired from his attorney job at a law firm for overcharging clients and padding client billings for personal gain.
  8. He was accused of assaulting a client amid a fee dispute, according to court documents.
  9. The Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission also conducted an investigation into DePerno’s activities as an attorney after a retired judge complained about DePerno’s unethical conduct, including making fraudulent claims.
  10. He made a name for himself among radical Republicans by challenging Antrim County election results in a failed lawsuit that sparked long running conspiracy theories, repeatedly debunked, about the 2020 election.
