James Craig’s extreme anti-choice stance is just one part of his dangerous, wrong-for-Michigan agenda. This week he stated again that he would ban abortion without exceptions for victims of rape or incest.

After previously dodging questions about his stance on reproductive healthcare, Craig was asked by MIRS this week to specifically address where he stands on permitting abortions for rape or incest victims. Craig reasserted his extreme stance opposing abortion for victims of rape and and incest, and said he supported “very limited exceptions” only for instances when the “the mother’s life is at risk.”

It has already been well-documented that Craig looks forward to Michigan immediately reverting to a severely restrictive law from 1931 that makes no exceptions for rape or incest, criminalizes abortion, and makes reproductive health care providers felons should Roe v. Wade get struck down.

He then doubled-down on his support for the near-total abortion ban, stating that he “is unapologetically pro-life and opposes liberal efforts for abortion on demand, late term abortions, and partial birth abortions.”

And when asked earlier this month to react to Garrett Soldano’s viral comment that women who became pregnant by rape should be forced to bring it to term because “God put them in this moment,” Craig backed his fellow gubernatorial candidate up

Craig was also then explicitly asked to clarify where stands “in…cases of rape or incest” and responded, “I’m still pro-life.”

MDP spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite issued the following statement:

“James Craig has previously made his ‘unapologetic’ anti-abortion extremism clear by supporting Michigan’s dormant 1931 abortion ban that fails to include exemption for rape, incest, or the life of the mother. Now he’s again confirming that he has a dangerous agenda that will hurt Michigan women and families. They won’t forget that Craig wants to dial back the clock and restrict access to abortions.”
