Yesterday, Governor Whitmer took the historic step to file a lawsuit seeking for the Michigan Supreme Court to “rule that a 1931 law criminalizing abortion violates the state constitution.” Should the suit be successful, reproductive health care won’t be deemed a felony within the state regardless of whether the U.S. Supreme Court guts or fully eliminates protections granted by Roe v. Wade.

Anti-choice extremists and gubernatorial Republicans James Craig, Tudor Dixon, Garrett Soldano, and Kevin Rinke quickly doubled down on their dangerous, anti-choice agendas and panned the move that could ensure 2.2 million Michigan women and countless families wouldn’t suffer the dangerous outcome of the 1931 near-total abortion ban being reinstated as law:

  • During an appearance on Fox 2’s “Let it Rip,” James Craig dismissed Whitmer’s action as “politics” and said, “When that bridge is crossed, I’m pro-life. I don’t know how many other ways to say that. I’m consistent, I’m unapologetic about it.”
  • Tudor Dixon: If Democrat politicians worked 1/10th as hard on policies to build up American families as they do on policies to promote and allow abortion on demand…there wouldn’t be much demand for abortion. The American family is under attack by liberal elites who hate the American people.
  • Garrett Soldano: Once again, Gretchen Whitmer is abusing her authority and ignoring the legislature, this time to advance a radical pro-abortion agenda. Michigan deserves a Governor who will stand unapologetically for the right to life!
  • Kevin Rinke: Asking judges to legislate abortions up to birth in our Constitution is a radical power play by @GovWhitmer to eliminate a child’s right to life. Democracy rests on the people to legislate their matters. Our Constitution should NEVER be altered for political gain.

MDP spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite issued the following statement:

“While Governor Whitmer is fighting like hell to ensure Michigan women and families do not lose their reproductive rights, James Craig, Tudor Dixon, Garrett Soldano, and Kevin Rinke showed them exactly what’s at stake in this election – especially if Roe v. Wade is overturned this spring. Unfortunately, their commitment to seeing their dangerous anti-choice agenda through is shared by every other Republican they are up against in the crowded and messy gubernatorial primary. Reproductive health care and access to safe and legal abortion depends on strong leaders like Governor Whitmer, who has been a champion for women at every turn.”
