This morning, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed SB 90, a blatant voter suppression bill limiting the ability of organizations to register voters and imposing new restrictions on vote-by-mail. Texas is also considering various pieces of legislation aimed at limiting access to voting. In response, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison issued the following statement:

“Republicans across the country know they’re failing to connect with and deliver for the American people, so they’ve decided their winning playbook centers on making it harder for them to make their voices heard. One of the last things I did with my grandfather was go vote, and he made a point to say to me then: Don’t let anyone tell you your voice doesn’t matter. That is what Republicans are doing with these measures, telling folks their voices don’t matter.

“Voting is our most sacred right. From the outrageous voting restrictions passed in Georgia earlier this year to SB 90 signed into law today in Florida and the various legislation under consideration in Texas, these new restrictions are rooted in Republicans’ desire to impose Jim Crow 2.0 in states across the country.

“In 2020, we saw the highest voter turnout in generations — over two-thirds of American adults participated in the election with no legitimate cases of widespread voter fraud. Republicans should join Democrats in building upon that success, rather than trying to undo it. As Democrats, we will use every tool in our toolbox to combat these bills and make sure every eligible voter can exercise their fundamental right to participate in our democracy.”
