DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement:

“Last month, we made history by electing Kamala Harris as vice president, and I’m proud that California will continue to break barriers by making Alex Padilla its first Latino U.S. Senator and Shirley Weber its first Black secretary of state. In Alex Padilla and Shirley Weber, the people of California have two true public servants. As secretary of state, Alex fought tirelessly to protect the integrity of our elections and expand access to the ballot. And as a U.S. senator, he will be a fearless champion for working families. The son of immigrants, Secretary Padilla has devoted his life to making things better for his fellow Californians – from the small business owners struggling to make ends meet, to the teachers charged with molding the next generation, to the frontline workers during this pandemic who are risking their lives each and every day. Shirley Weber has also spent decades improving her community. As an assemblywoman and a longtime teacher, Dr. Weber has been a forceful advocate for the quality education every child deserves. And as the daughter of sharecroppers who were once denied the right to vote, Dr. Weber is acutely aware of just how important it is to make sure everyone can make their voice heard in our democracy. She is the perfect choice to lead California and the nation in the fight to protect our elections, expand access to the ballot, and end voter suppression. Governor Newsom has made two terrific decisions, and I can’t wait to see all that Secretary Padilla and Dr. Weber accomplish in the months to come.”
