In response to Donald Trump endorsing an extreme national abortion ban on the one-year anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s endorsement of a national abortion ban on the one-year anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade is a natural, full circle moment for the same man who called for punishing women who get an abortion and is responsible for the cruel abortion bans across the country already happening. Despite an overwhelming majority of Americans rejecting a national abortion ban, MAGA Republicans in the 2024 primary have made clear they won’t rest until every woman in this country is stripped of their reproductive freedom.”
Take it from Trump himself: “Nobody has ever done more” to rip away women’s freedom to make their own health care decisions than him.
Trump: “Nobody has ever done more for ‘Right to Life’ than Donald Trump. I put three Supreme Court justices, who all voted, and they got something that they’ve been fighting for 64 years, or many, many years.”
The Washington Post: “Steven Cheung, a spokesman for Trump, said in a statement that Trump’s ‘unmatched record speaks for itself,’ pointing to his policies and appointments of antiabortion federal judges and Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade last summer, erasing a ruling that established a constitutional right to abortion and delivering a decades-long priority for conservative Christians.”
And let’s not forget that Trump has called to punish women for having an abortion.
Donald Trump: “There has to be some form of punishment [for women who have abortions].”
And while in office, Trump literally pledged to sign an extreme national abortion ban – one that could throw doctors in prison for providing care.
The Hill: “The Trump administration formally backed a House bill Monday that would ban abortions after 20 weeks… It would make it a crime to perform or attempt an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, with the possibility of a fine, up to five years in prison or both.”
