FACT CHECK: Republicans Have No Plan To Fight Inflation, Want To Raise Costs for Families
Here’s two important things to keep in mind as Republicans breathlessly talk about inflation: 1) Republicans still have no plan to fight inflation, and 2) the Republican Party’s agenda would actually raise costs for families by increasing taxes, making health care more expensive, and doing nothing to lower prescription drug prices.
The same Republican lawmakers who cheered rising prices as a political “gold mine” STILL have no plan or answer as to how Republicans would combat inflation, and are instead focused on blocking President Biden’s agenda to lower costs.
Insider: “Republicans are ecstatic that Biden is struggling with inflation: ‘This is a gold mine for us’”
NBC News: “Republicans target Biden, Democrats over inflation. What would they do about it?”
PERINO: “So, inflation, gas, and groceries, this is on everybody’s minds. What would be different for Americans if Republicans win back the majorities in the House and Senate this year?”
MCCONNELL: “Well, our agenda next year, if we’re fortunate enough to be in the majority, will be focused on exactly what you and I have been talking about, crime, education, beefing up the defense of our country… So all of those will be on our agenda. We will not have the presidency for two more years. Obviously, we will have to work with the administration to see what we can agree on. But we want to turn the president — let me put it this way, Biden ran as a moderate. If I’m the majority leader in the Senate, and Kevin McCarthy’s the speaker of the House, we’ll make sure Joe Biden is a moderate.”
Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers and candidates across the country are rallying around Rick Scott’s plan to raise taxes on millions of middle-class and working families.
Associated Press: “Ohio GOP Senate hopeful: Middle class doesn’t pay fair share”
Daily Beast: “At least four GOP candidates in the most important battleground states this fall have either explicitly expressed support for Scott’s plan or have campaigned on the political views that form the foundation of his platform.”
New York Times: “The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center estimated that ensuring all households pay at least $100 in income taxes would leave families making about $54,000 or less with more than 80 percent of the tax increase. Those making less than about $100,000 would shoulder 97 percent of the cost.”
Republicans have similarly made clear that a key plank of their agenda would be to repeal the Affordable Care Act – making health care more expensive and undermining protections for preexisting conditions – and doing NOTHING to lower prescription drug prices.
Politico: “Chuck Grassley made quite the admission about prescription drug pricing: Pass it now, because he isn’t sure a GOP-led Congress can get it done.”
Washington Post: “Sen. Ron Johnson says Obamacare should be repealed if GOP wins power back”
Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “At the northeast Georgia Republican candidate forum over the weekend, four Republican Senate contenders each signaled support for repealing the Affordable Care Act.”
Vanity Fair: “GOP MAKES ‘PRICE GOUGE DIABETICS ON INSULIN’ PART OF ITS OFFICIAL PARTY PLATFORM”
