DePerno becomes national poster child for ludicrous conspiracy theories

LANSING – “This guy, smiling for the pictures, is running to be the top law enforcement official in the state of Michigan, so why is he also running from us?”

That’s a question from a CNN reporter trying to get Republican Attorney General candidate Matt DePerno to answer questions about his role in an illegal scheme to tamper with voting machines. Reporting by the Detroit News has laid out DePerno’s role in the illegal plot to alter voting tabulators, even noting his own comments about his involvement in the conspiracy.

“Election denier Matt DePerno can run but he can’t hide from his disgraceful record that includes a criminal investigation for illegally tampering with voting machines,” said Lavora Barnes, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party. “DePerno has become a national disgrace and laughingstock for illegal and unethical conduct and fringe views which clearly and utterly disqualify him from higher office, or any office for that matter.”

Earlier this year, The Washington Post reported that DePerno was among those radical conspiracy theorists who met with members of former President Donald Trump’s administration to devise a plan aimed at overturning the results of the 2020 election in which Trump lost to President Joe Biden.
