As we’ve been saying, if Republicans gain power, they will elevate the most extreme members of their caucus, even the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene who has spent her time spewing conspiracy theories and cozying up with anti-semites and white nationalists.

Greene said that McCarthy needed to “give [her] a lot of power and a lot of leeway” if he becomes speaker of the House.

New York Times Magazine: “‘I think that to be the best speaker of the House and to please the base, he’s going to give me a lot of power and a lot of leeway,’ she predicted in a flat, unemotional voice. ‘And if he doesn’t, they’re going to be very unhappy about it. I think that’s the best way to read that. And that’s not in any way a threat at all. I just think that’s reality.’”

McCarthy has already begun elevating Greene. He tried to stop Democrats from stripping her of her committee assignments and put her front and center for the release of his agenda.

New York Times Magazine: “The question now confronting McCarthy, the House minority leader, was whether he could dissuade the Democratic majority from stripping Greene of her committee assignments. The day before the Feb. 3 Republican meeting, according to a source with knowledge of the exchange, he contacted the House majority leader, Steny Hoyer […] and asked, ‘What if we just put Marjorie on the Small Business Committee?’ Hoyer advised McCarthy that this would probably not fly with the Democrats.”

Associated Press: “Marjorie Taylor Greene took her seat directly behind Republican House leader Kevin McCarthy, a proximity to power for the firebrand congresswoman that did not go unnoticed, as he unveiled the House GOP’s midterm election agenda in Pennsylvania.”

House Oversight Ranking Member James Comer, a possible future chair of the committee if Republicans win in November, also said he “look[ed] forward” to Republicans like Greene joining the committee.

New York Times Magazine: “In a statement for this story, Representative James Comer, the Oversight Committee’s ranking member and most likely its chairman should the Republicans win back the House, said, ‘If Americans entrust Republicans with the majority next Congress, we look forward to the Steering Committee adding new G.O.P. members to the committee like Rep. Greene with energy and a strong interest in partnering with us in our efforts to rein in the unaccountable Swamp and to hold the Biden Administration accountable for its many self-inflicted crises that it has unleashed on the American people.’”
