IN THE STATES: By Voting Against the American Rescue Plan, Republicans Opposed Needed Relief for Veterans

As we honored those who gave their lives to protect our country this week, Democrats from Pennsylvania to Arizona are reminding voters that — thanks to President Biden and Democrats — help is here for military service members and veterans. The American Rescue Plan, which passed no thanks to a single Republican in Congress, allocates $17 billion in support of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) nationwide response to the pandemic.

Here’s a look at the other issues voters in states across the country were reading about this week:

Thanks to President Biden and Democrats, the American Rescue Plan is providing a boost for families participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to buy more fruits and vegetables, helping children and families, and infants get enough to eat.

According to a new poll released this week by Navigator Research, the majority of voters believe that Republicans in Congress work on behalf of the wealthy and big corporations. The same poll showed—by an 18-point margin—that President Joe Biden is seen as standing up for the middle class and working people.

Congresswoman-elect Melanie Stansbury won the New Mexico special election to represent New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District in what DNC Chair Jaime Harrison called “a cautionary tale to Republicans across the country.”

  • DNC Chair Jaime Harrison“Standing in the way of delivering for the American people is not what voters are looking for. New Mexicans proved that tonight. Meanwhile, President Biden and Democrats are offering a bold agenda to build our country back better, delivering on their promises, and getting our country back on track — it’s going to be an easy choice for the American people come these midterm elections.”

You most likely saw that U.S. jobless claims dropped to yet another new pandemic-era low last week and the U.S. has brought new coronavirus infections down to the lowest level since March 2020, when the pandemic began. But did you catch Governor Ron DeSantis touting Florida’s budget while conveniently forgetting to mention the nearly $10.2 billion in funding came from the American Rescue Plan, which he and his fellow Florida Republicans opposed? Well, we did. See herehere, and here.

Ahead of the GOP Conventions in Georgia and North Carolina this weekend, state parties showed the clear contrast between the leadership of Democrats and Republicans.
