LOCAL NEWS: Biden Establishes National Monument in Colorado

Yesterday, President Biden traveled to Colorado to establish the first new national monument of his presidency: the Camp Hale – Continental Divide National Monument. During his visit, President Biden joined Senator Michael Bennet, Senator John Hickenlooper, Governor Jared Polis, and Representative Joe Neguse for a ceremony marking the event, where he emphasized the administration’s commitment to protect, conserve, and restore our outdoor spaces and historical sites, as well as to honor our nation’s veterans and Indigenous peoples.

“‘These treasured lands tell the story of America,’ Biden said. ‘You can just feel the power of this place when you talk about it. … That’s what today is all about. We’re doing it not just for today, but for all of the ages. It’s for the people of Colorado, but it also goes well beyond the people of Colorado. It’s for all the people across America and the world.’”

“‘The rugged landscape of Camp Hale – Continental Divide serves as a testament to a pivotal moment in America’s military history, as these peaks and valleys forged the elite soldiers of the famed 10th Mountain Division — the Army’s first and only mountain infantry division — that helped liberate Europe in World War II,’ part of a news release from the White House reads. ‘The area lies within the ancestral homelands of the Ute Tribes, along the Continental Divide in north-central Colorado, and is treasured for its historical and spiritual significance, stunning geological features, abundant recreation opportunities, and rare wildlife and plants. The area’s mountains and valleys also shaped our modern outdoor recreation economy, which today supports millions of American jobs.’”

“The Biden Administration also moved to block mining and oil and gas drilling on 225,000 acres of Colorado’s Thompson Divide — another tract of land included in the Colorado Outdoor Recreation Economy Act, a massive public lands bill that has passed the House of Representatives five times only to run aground in the U.S. Senate.”

“‘Soldiers in Camp Hale learned to scale rock, ski and survive, preparing for the war they were about to fight,’ said Biden, who for Wednesday’s announcement was joined by two veterans from the 10th Mountain Division. He praised the troops’ ‘skill, strength and stamina that could’ve been only gained in a place like this.’”
