MDP: Far-right Michigan House candidate who used bizarre rape analogy is unfit for office
Republican House speaker still silent on committee assignments if bizarre conspiracy theorist Robert Regan wins Tuesday’s special election
LANSING – Republican Robert Regan’s troubled candidacy, which has been marked by offensive comments and lies about the 2020 election, shows he is unfit to fill the Michigan House 74th District seat. Voters go to the polls for Tuesday’s special election.
“Time and again Robert Regan has shown the people of Kent County that he is totally unfit for public office,” said Lavora Barnes, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party. “This candidate blames Ukraine for the Russian invasion of that country, jokes about rape and lives in an alternate reality fueled by conspiracy theories and debunked claims. When will Republicans denounce Regan’s dangerous words and conduct?”
Over the past few months, while Regan has campaigned to represent the district that covers part of Kent County, he has made numerous irresponsible and false claims and inflammatory comments, including: Using a bizarre rape analogy in an effort to make a case for overturning the 2020 presidential election based on the debunked claims that the election was stolen; Outrageously calling Ukraine “culpable” in the Russia invasion; and Being part of a group supporting a ballot initiative to “decertify” the 2020 presidential election.
State House Democrats have urged GOP Speaker Jason Wentworth to lay out his plans to ensure a harassment-free environment should Regan be elected. The Michigan Democratic Party supports this call for accountability and transparency.
Regan faces Carol Glanville, a Democrat and a Walker City Commissioner, in Tuesday’s special election.
