Today, the U.S. Department of Labor announced that an impressive 467,000 new jobs were added to our country’s economy last month and that the economy added nearly 7 million jobs in 2021. Thanks to the Biden-Harris administration’s economic and public health policies, unemployment and childhood poverty dropped significantly in the past year – further proving that President Biden is leading an economic recovery that is getting folks back to work and rebuilding the middle-class from the bottom up and the middle out.

Here in Michigan, the impact of Biden’s American Rescue Plan remains clear as more people enroll under the ACA with lower premiums, communities receive millions for  access to high-speed internet, and Main Street businesses build back better. Thanks to Governor Whitmer’s steadfast leadership, Michiganders from Houghton to Detroit continue to head back to work.

Following today’s strong report, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes released the following statement:

“The economic growth we saw in January is a testament to the incredible impact of President Biden’s American Rescue Plan. This historic legislation injected small businesses with the funds they needed to recover, reduced bottlenecks in the supply chain, got families back on their feet by putting checks in pockets, and created hundreds of thousands of jobs by investing in state and local communities — and not a single Michigan Republican voted for it.

“While Democrats have worked to put this pandemic behind us and get working families back on their feet, congressional Republicans continue to stand in the way of progress. Thankfully, Michigan has Democrats in the White House and in the Governor’s House who are committed to delivering for Michiganders.”
