Today, a bipartisan U.S. Senate confirmed Judge Kentaji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court as an Associate Justice. In response to her historic confirmation, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes released the following statement:

“Today, another ceiling has been shattered with the Senate’s confirmation of one of the brightest legal minds in the country and the first Black woman to the U.S. Supreme Court – Judge Kentaji Brown Jackson. Nobody can steal our joy as we usher in a new chapter of this country’s history because now little Black girls will come of age with a Supreme Court Justice that looks like them, making decisions that will impact the rest of their lives. This vote ensures we have a Supreme Court that better reflects the diversity of Michigan and our nation.

“This is history made and promises kept by President Biden, who campaigned on the promise to nominate the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. Thank you to Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters for voting to confirm Judge Jackson’s historic nomination.”
