Today, every single Michigan House Republican running for re-election, voted against a bill that would protect Michiganders’ ability to access contraceptives and contraception, and protect health care providers’ ability to provide them. Representatives Bergman (MI-01), Huizenga (MI-02), Meijer (MI-03), Moolenaar (MI-04), Walberg (MI-07), and McClain (MI-09) have shown their willingness to set us back decades with their vote today.

“Last week, Michigan Republicans made it clear they won’t protect the right to an abortion and will restrict womens’ travel from state to state. A few days ago, the GOP put their homophobia and bigotry on display by voting against marriage equality. And today, they’ve laid out their vision for a dystopian future where Michiganders won’t be able to access contraceptives,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes. “It’s clear that Democrats are the only Party interested in securing Michiganders’ freedom while Republicans plan to take us back decades.”

Today’s vote follows the Supreme Court’s decision to ignore 50 years of precedent to overturn Roe v. Wade and allow states to outlaw abortion, and potentially target other rights, such as the right to same-sex marriage and the right to contraception. The vote also comes days after 157 House Republicans voted against legislation to protect marriage equality, and just a week after nearly all House Republicans voted against bills to protect Americans’ right to make their own health care decisions and to prevent states from punishing women who cross state lines to seek access to health care.
