This weekend, the Republican Party of Wisconsin is set to vote on their midterm platform that calls for charging abortion providers with a class A felony—punishable by life in prison. In response, DNC spokesperson Ammar Moussa released the following statement:

“This is what Republicans’ post-Roe world looks like—hellbent on criminalizing abortion, jailing doctors with lifetime sentences, threatening to restrict access to birth control, and potentially even jeopardizing IVF treatments. Every single Republican will have to answer for this and will be held accountable for their extreme MAGA agenda.”

The Wisconsin GOP’s resolution calls for first degree intentional homicide to be applied to abortion procedures, implying that anyone who performs an abortion should be guilty of a class A felony—punishable by life in prison.

From the Republican Party of Wisconsin: “WHEREAS, governments are instituted by God among mankind, being charged with the duty to secure 634 and protect the right to life, and establish justice for all; and,

“WHEREAS, Wisconsin Statute 940.04(6) declares, “‘unborn child’ means a human being from the time of conception”; and,

“WHEREAS, Wisconsin Statute 940.01(a) declares, “whoever causes the death of another human being 638 with intent to kill that person or another is guilty of a Class A felony”

[…]

“BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Republican Party of Wisconsin, calls upon the Wisconsin legislature to interpose on behalf of preborn children in Wisconsin and enact legislation to stop the murder of unborn children; and

“BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Republican Party of Wisconsin directs state legislators to work to end the murder of the preborn in the State of Wisconsin as a legislative priority for the 2022 legislative session.”

While Republicans in Wisconsin and other states push for extreme and dangerous bans on abortion and threaten access to contraceptives, new polling shows their MAGA agenda is extremely unpopular with voters.

Politico: “On the midterms: Fifty-eight percent of voters said it is important for them to vote for a candidate in the midterms who supports abortion access. That includes 82% of Democratic voters, 57% of independents and more than 1 in 3 Republicans (35%).”

Politico: “As for what might happen with Roe gone, across the board, voters overwhelmingly oppose criminal penalties for women and doctors who obtain or perform abortions.”
