Today, the bipartisan U.S. House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol is conducting a previously unscheduled hearing as more harrowing details emerge on the violent insurrection that killed five and injured 140 officers in Washington D.C.

Throughout the crowded Republican gubernatorial primary, candidates like Tudor Dixon have embraced, echoed, and manufactured baseless lies about both the insurrection and the 2020 election to stoke public distrust in the democratic process. Dixon in particular has leaned heavily on conspiracy theories throughout her campaign.

This January, Dixon declared “I don’t believe that we had an insurrection.”

Prior to launching her campaign, Dixon was a host on Real America’s Voice Live, described by one of its producers as a “propaganda network.” She routinely used her position on the cable network that “seems to be trying to outdo Newsmax and One America News” to downplay the scale of violence witnessed during the insurrection.

In the days immediately following, Dixon claimed without evidence that there were “people on both sides” at the insurrection. She suggested that “maybe ANTIFA” was a part of the insurrection and could have drawn in unknowing Trump supporters. Dixon complained that conservatives were being criticized over January 6th rioters representing “a very small faction of Trump supporters.”

Dixon doubled down on her extreme stance and leapt to the defense of fellow Republican gubernatorial candidate Ryan Kelley for his role in the insurrection that resulted in him being sacked with multiple criminal charges – including knowingly engaging in any act of physical violence against a person or property in a restricted building or ground. According to her, Kelley’s arrest was “another example of political prosecution by a Democrat Party notorious for weaponizing government.”

MDP spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite issued the following statement:

“As Congress still sorts through the alarming violence that took place on January 6th, Tudor Dixon’s radical extremism has been on display as she went so far as to swiftly defend Ryan Kelley’s participation even as he gets processed through federal court on multiple criminal charges. Michiganders deserve leadership that won’t hesitate to call out brutality in all its forms, not cater to election conspiracy theorists in their quest to hold power and cultivate public distrust in the democratic process.”
