The Republican Party has been at war with itself over the future of the party after Trump was decisively defeated and then incited and encouraged a deadly insurrection at the Capitol. Instead of choosing the side of democracy and the vast majority of the American people, the Republican Party has chosen extremism and is doubling down on Trump.

The Republican Party is deeply divided and has been in a cold war over its future and whether to move past Trump.

CNN: “A cold war is underway within the Republican Party as its members begin to navigate how former President Donald Trump and his legacy fit into the GOP’s future.”

USA Today: “Republicans are already fighting about whether to move past Trump by convicting him – and blocking him from seeking office again – or keep faith with the former president and his large base of voters ahead of elections in 2022 and 2024.”

After Trump incited and encouraged a deadly insurrection, Republicans have decided on their future: more Trump.

Politico: “The GOP’s answer to its post-Trump blues: More Trump”

Washington Post: “Three weeks after the insurrection, Senate Republicans again close ranks around Trump”

Associated Press: “GOP signals unwillingness to part with Trump after riot”

Republican state parties across the country have continued down Trump’s extremist path and even attacked members of their own party to do so.

Politico: “Pennsylvania GOP pledges full allegiance to Trump”

Arizona Republic’s EJ Montini: “Republicans no longer want Republicans in the Arizona Republican Party”

WMUR: “After four hours Saturday of mostly chaos and infighting on how their annual meeting was being conducted via Zoom due to the COVID pandemic, [NH GOP] leaders decided to adjourn to try to figure out a better way to meet and discuss issues and vote on candidates for top party officers in the coming weeks.”

Vox: “Donald Trump’s departure from the White House left a giant question mark hanging over American democracy: Would the GOP reckon with its embrace of Trumpism, or would it continue down the extremist path it has been traveling for years? The evidence from the past few weeks has not been promising. But one of the most disturbing signs — and one of the most underappreciated — has been the wild behavior of certain state-level Republican parties in recent days. Three examples — in Oregon, Hawaii, and Arizona — really stick out.”

Trump is threatening revenge on any Republican who tries to buck him and the far-right extremist direction of the party.

USA Today: “Trump is also threatening vengeance on those who oppose him by threatening to back primary challengers against them, aides said, just as he did the ten House Republicans who voted for impeachment. The former president is planning to back 2022 primary challengers against Republicans who refused to help him overturn the election, aides said. That list ranges from Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp to U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming.”

The faces of the new Republican Party show the extent of Trump’s takeover, like Marjorie Taylor Greene who supported executing politicians.

CNN: “Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene repeatedly indicated support for executing prominent Democratic politicians in 2018 and 2019 before being elected to Congress, a CNN KFile review of hundreds of posts and comments from Greene’s Facebook page shows.”
