LANSING — Former Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette announced today he will not run for Congress against Congressman Dan Kildee in Michigan’s Eighth Congressional District.

Schuette, who lost handedly to Governor Gretchen Whitmer in 2018, was a top recruit of the National Republican Campaign Committee to run for Congress in 2022. His announcement that he will not challenge Congressman Dan Kildee demonstrates the strong position Kildee is in as he seeks re-election.

“Despite their best efforts, national Republicans have failed to recruit Bill Schuette to run for Congress. Even Bill Schuette knows that working families in Flint, Saginaw, Bay City and Midland strongly support Congressman Kildee because he’s a fighter for working people and gets real results,” said MDP Chairwoman Lavora Barnes. “The National Republican Campaign Committee failing to get their top recruit showcases the strong position Congressman Kildee is in to win in November.”

In Congress, Kildee has gotten real results for his constituents. This year, Kildee helped to pass the American Rescue Plan, putting stimulus checks in workers’ pockets, accelerating vaccine distribution, reopening schools safely and supporting small businesses during the pandemic. Kildee also helped pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, bringing home billions of dollars to repair roads, rebuild bridges, replace lead pipes and expand high-speed broadband internet to every Michigan family. Kildee also secured full funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, to help stop invasive species like Asian carp and stop pollution from contaminating our water. Finally, Kildee, as co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional PFAS Task Force, has led the effort in Congress to more urgently clean up dangerous PFAS chemicals.

Kildee holds several high-profile positions in Congress that help him advocate for Michigan families, including serving as Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus and sitting on the powerful Ways and Means Committee. Kildee also serves on the House Budget Committee and Science, Space and Technology Committee.
