Instead of working to protect our country from the coronavirus or a massive national security breach, Trump has remained fixated on his baseless claims of widespread voter fraud and ramped up his efforts to overturn the will of the people. Last week, Trump held a meeting where his desperation hit a new low as he discussed taking extreme steps such as declaring martial law and seizing voting machines, which he has no authority to do.

Trump has remained fixated on overturning the will of the people, despite his repeated failed attempts, instead of protecting the American people.

Wall Street Journal: “In a week that began with the Electoral College affirming Joe Biden’s victory and ended with Vice President Mike Pence taking a new Covid-19 vaccine, with a massive national security breach in between, President Trump has been largely out of sight. Instead, six weeks after the election, the president remains fixated on his unsuccessful efforts to overturn the results, advisers say. He pays close attention to TV coverage of state hearings on alleged election fraud, though no evidence of widespread fraud has surfaced, and in tweets and phone calls has urged his advisers and lawyers to keep going.”

Trump asked about the idea of imposing martial law and deploying the military to overturn the will of the people and “rerun” the election.

New York Times: “During an appearance on the conservative Newsmax channel this week, Mr. Flynn pushed for Mr. Trump to impose martial law and deploy the military to ‘rerun’ the election. At one point in the meeting on Friday, Mr. Trump asked about that idea.”

Trump discussed naming Sidney Powell, who he fired for being too outlandish, as a special counsel to investigate his baseless claims of election fraud, despite having no power to do so.

Wall Street Journal: “In an Oval Office meeting Friday with Sidney Powell, a lawyer he ousted last month from his legal team, the president discussed the prospect of naming her a special counsel to investigate his claims of election fraud, according to people familiar with the meeting. The president doesn’t have the power to appoint a special counsel.”

Trump raised the prospect of having DHS seize voter machines to pursue baseless and repeatedly debunked claims of fraud, despite the agency not having the authority to do so.

Wall Street Journal: “Earlier in the week, the president in a meeting with Ken Cuccinelli, the No. 2 official at DHS, raised the prospect of the department seizing voter machines as part of the effort to pursue allegations of voter fraud, according to people familiar with the meeting.”

New York Times: “Mr. Cuccinelli is said to have told Mr. Giuliani that there is no authority by which the agency, which spent the year working with state election officials to prepare for the election, could assert control over voting machines in those states.”

White House lawyers and his own advisers said Trump’s proposed efforts to overturn the will of the people have no constitutional authority.

New York Times: “Mr. Cipollone told Mr. Trump there was no constitutional authority for what was being discussed, one of the people briefed on the meeting said. Other advisers from the White House and the Trump campaign delivered the same message throughout the meeting, which stretched on for a long period of time.”
