With Tax Day upon us next Monday, MDP will be holding Republicans running for governor accountable, shedding light on the aspects of their campaign, background, or policies Michiganders deserve more transparency on.
MDP is renewing its Sunshine Week call for Perry Johnson and his 11 gubernatorial opponents to disclose their tax returns and personal financial information, which Governor Whitmer has voluntarily done annually since she was a candidate in 2018. Michigan working families deserve answers on whose interests the wrong-for-Michigan candidates are angling to protect.
MDP spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite issued the following statement:
“Perry Johnson’s millions won’t save him from being held accountable. Ahead of Tax Day, we’re urging the odd-quality ‘guru’ to be transparent with Michiganders about his shady business practices and singular focus on conspiracy theories.”
As a reminder, “prolific junk faxer” Johnson has already racked up several issues that Michiganders need clarity on despite being the latest to join the crowded and messy gubernatorial primary:
- What actually commands his attention – since he’s already said he’s “not interested in the same things” as Michiganders
- Why he keeps spamming the airwaves with ads that he admits are false
- How he defends his business practices that were “on the wrong side of ethics”
How he balances his message of “quality” while also propping up election conspiracy theories based on zero evidence of fraud found across “more than 250” audits, a fact verified by the Republican-led state Senate
