Working to prevent an Authoritarian-Government Overthrow
The most effective way to stop an authoritarian government involves a combination of nonviolent mass mobilization and the strategic defense of democratic institutions and norms. Success often depends on a "whole-of-society" approach that unites diverse groups across political divides.
Key Strategies for Resistance
- Embrace Nonviolent Resistance: Research shows that nonviolent campaigns are twice as likely to succeed as violent ones because they attract mass participation and can persuade "pillars of support" (like security forces and businesses) to defect from the regime. The "3.5% rule" suggests that sustained nonviolent protests involving just 3.5% of the population makes the government's collapse likely.
- Build Broad Coalitions: Authoritarianism thrives on division. Pro-democracy forces must unite across different political, social, and professional groups (e.g., labor unions, religious groups, business leaders, veterans, students) to prioritize freedom and the rule of law over partisan loyalty.
- Defend and Pressure Institutions: Protect institutions that act as checks and balances, such as independent courts, a free press, and robust electoral oversight bodies. Mass civic pressure, including boycotts, petitions, and legal challenges, can be targeted strategically at these institutions and the individuals who work within them to ensure accountability and prevent them from being co-opted by the regime.
- Win the Narrative War: Authoritarians spread disinformation and stoke fear. It is crucial to counter these efforts by supporting independent journalism, fact-finding, and storytelling that promotes hope, highlights the importance of democratic values, and humanizes the stakes of the struggle.
- Do Not Obey in Advance: A key lesson is to refuse to normalize or comply with authoritarian demands prematurely. Citizens who adapt to repression without being asked are effectively teaching the government what it can get away with. Stand out, set an example, and be as courageous as you can, as others will follow.
It is essential to Build Local Infrastructure and Mutual Aid: Resistance is more effective when networked at the local level. Creating community hubs for organizing skills, spotting disinformation, and connecting with people helps build the long-term infrastructure for resistance. Mutual aid groups also help communities become self-reliant and resilient against government neglect or targeting.
Ultimately, stopping an authoritarian government requires a proactive, coordinated, and sustained "whole-of-society" approach, combining institutional defense with popular mass
