In response to Republican Rep. Lance Gooden’s racist comments toward Rep. Judy Chu, the first Chinese American woman to be elected to Congress, DNC Deputy Executive Director Roger Lau, DNC AAPI Caucus Chair Bel Leong-Hong, DNC AAPI Caucus Vice Chair Otto Lee, DNC AAPI Caucus Secretary Keith Umemoto, and DNC AAPI Caucus Treasurer Amy Monk released the following statement:

“Rep. Gooden’s racist comments are not only disrespectful to Congresswoman Chu’s dedicated service to our country, but also endanger those in the Asian American and Pacific Islander community across our country at a time when threats against Asian Americans are on the rise. Democrats stand with Congresswoman Chu and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus in condemning Rep. Gooden’s bigoted comments, and call on House Republican leadership to do the same.”
