In response to House Republicans playing political games tonight instead of working to pass bipartisan border security legislation, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:
“House Republicans are failing the American people by pursuing baseless political stunts to do the bidding of Donald Trump instead of supporting a bipartisan deal to secure the border. By openly putting politics ahead of border security, MAGA Mike Johnson and his House GOP chaos conference are once again putting Trump’s political ambitions first – and the American people last.”
House Republicans baselessly impeached Secretary of Homeland Security Mayorkas – showing once again they are just another arm of Donald Trump’s campaign.

Politico: “As Republicans accuse Mayorkas of grossly mishandling the border, Johnson is actively refusing to consider the Senate’s bipartisan deal to ramp up border security.”
MAGA Mike Johnson previously railed against “single-party impeachment” – before pushing a sham impeachment on Secretary Mayorkas to appease his far-right base.
Speaker Mike Johnson: “The founders of this country warned us against a single-party impeachment for good reason. They feared that it would bitterly and perhaps irreparably divide our nation.”
Speaker Mike Johnson: “I hope and pray that future Congresses can and will exercise greater restraint.”
House Republicans are more focused on their childish infighting and impeachment shams than securing the border.

Trump: “I think [Republicans] are making a terrible mistake if they vote for the bill.”

Johnson rejected the bipartisan border security legislation despite repeatedly calling for action to secure the border and saying it “is a job for Congress.”
Johnson: “Our immigration system is broken. Reforming that system is a job for Congress.”
Johnson: “The crisis at our southern border has deteriorated to such an extent that significant action can wait no longer.”
Johnson: “We must insist — must insist — that the border be the top priority.”
Johnson: “I do think it’s past time to secure the border.”
Johnson: “I have said that very clearly from day one, we have to solve the [border] problem.”
House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik said the top priority for House Republicans was securing the border.
Stefanik: “Our top priority is securing the southern border.”
Stefanik: “The reality is the House Republicans are going to stand up for border security on behalf of the American people, because we know that is the top concern among Americans, not just Republicans, but Independents and Democrat voters as well.”
Stefanik: “I know that the Speaker’s top priority is securing the border.”
The Guardian: “‘We don’t support shutting down the government,’ Stefanik said. ‘But we must secure the border.’”
Multiple House Republicans have warned their own colleagues against politicizing border security and delaying taking action.
Tom Emmer: “Why does it have to be a political issue when it’s the right thing to do to seal our own border and make sure that good people that want to come here for the right reasons are able to come here?”
Chip Roy: “It’s time to act with urgency. Urgency means not waiting for the next election.”
Michael McCaul: “I think [the border] is a very urgent problem. We can’t wait a year.”
Bryan Steil: “The border needs to be secure. We have an opportunity to do that… I’m less concerned about who gets the win other than making sure the American people win, and the American people win if we truly secure the US-Mexico border.”
Patrick McHenry: “We have bipartisan support. … Take the moment, man. Take the policy win.”
Republicans in Congress have been lashing out at each other for continuing to do nothing for the American people.
