As the race for the MAGA base drags on, a national abortion ban remains the definitive litmus test of the 2024 Republican primary – and candidates have been lining up to support one – especially as Lindsey Graham plans to reintroduce his extreme federal ban.
Lindsey Graham plans to reintroduce legislation to rip away abortion rights from every woman across the country.
Post and Courier: “Graham said he will reintroduce legislation to create a federal ban on abortions at 15 weeks as he tries to get Republicans to reach shared consensus on the issue in a post-Roe America.”
An overwhelming majority of Americans reject Republicans’ extreme anti-choice agenda.
CBS News: “CBS News poll finds most say Roe’s overturn has been bad for country, half say abortion has been more restricted than expected”
“Women — six in 10 of whom disapprove of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe — feel that decision has not only been an infringement on women’s rights, but also a threat to women’s health: More than half of women think being pregnant in the U.S. today is becoming more dangerous from a health care perspective.”
USA Today: “Americans overwhelmingly oppose the next goal of many anti-abortion activists, to enact a federal law banning abortion nationwide. By 80%-14%, those surveyed opposed that idea, including 65% of Republicans and 83% of independents. By 53%-39%, they supported a federal law ensuring access to abortion.”
But 2024 Republicans don’t care how wildly out of touch and dangerous their extreme stances on abortion bans are – they’re still tripping over each other to endorse a national ban and chase the MAGA base.
The Messenger: Would you sign a six week abortion ban or not?
Trump: “I’m looking at all [options].”
DeSantis: “Dobbs returned the issue to the elected representatives of the people. And so I think that there’s, there’s role for both the federal and the states.”
Wolf Blitzer: “Would you support a six-week ban nationwide?”
Pence: “Well, of course. Look — I’m pro-life. I don’t apologize for it. I believe that we’ve got to do everything in our power to restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law. And I’d support federal legislation in that regard if I was in the Congress or had any other job here in town.”
Newsmax: “Your colleague in the Senate – also your colleague from South Carolina – Lindsey Graham is pushing for a 15-week federal abortion ban, something that’s going to be an issue come the next election. Would a President Scott sign that bill into law?”
Scott: “Every day, I would sign that bill into law. I would sign the most conservative pro-life legislation you can bring to my desk.”
Meg Kinnard, Associated Press: “Yes of course I would sign’ federal ban, Haley says.”
USA Today: “Presidential candidate and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said he would sign into law a 15-week national abortion ban if he were president, a departure from his previous stance when he said the issue should be left up to individual states.”
Wall Street Journal: “[Suarez] said he would support a national ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions for rape, incest and the life of mother.”
