LANSING — Today, Michigan Senate Democrats passed the Michigan Family Protection Act on the Senate floor, sending the surrogacy and IVF protection package to Governor Whitmer’s desk for her signature. Championed by Democratic leaders like Rep. Samantha Steckloff in the House, Michigan is one step closer to protecting IVF from the extremist attacks that Republicans are waging nationwide.

“Extremist Republicans weren’t willing to set aside their MAGA agenda to stand up and change Michigan’s outdated surrogacy laws so they no longer harm families,” said Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes. “Michigan Democrats are championing the personal freedoms of all parents and families with this legislation. This package will safeguard those who choose fertility treatments and give them the same legal rights as any other parents. By standing in the way of progress yet again, Republicans are ignoring Michigan values and making it clear where they stand on reproductive health and freedom.”

Back in November, Republicans in the House, led by MAGA Matt Hall, voted against this package in lockstep and continued to demonstrate that they will put their extremist politics ahead of the freedoms of Michiganders.

The Michigan Family Protection Act is the next step in securing reproductive freedoms for all Michiganders and ensuring all families are treated equally. Before this package, Michigan was an outlier as the only state that criminalized paid surrogacy — now, thanks to Democrats, we are once again defending the rights of Michiganders.
