More 2024 Republicans Endorse a National Abortion Ban
2024 Republicans have been tripping over themselves over the past two weeks to affirm their support for the key MAGA litmus test of the GOP primary — a national abortion ban. As the GOP primary heats up, more 2024 Republican hopefuls are racing to endorse the most extreme anti-choice agenda in the field, and they’ll stop at nothing to achieve their goal of completely banning abortion.
Just this weekend, Asa Hutchinson revealed his support for a national abortion ban, which comes as NO surprise given he signed one of the country’s most extreme abortion bans with NO exceptions for rape or incest.
USA Today: “Hutchinson would support ‘a national standard’ on abortion”
The Independent: “Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson defended his state’s controversial law that makes all abortions illegal in all cases except to save the life of the patient in a medical emergency on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday morning.”
Also over the weekend, Pence doubled down on his promise to sign a national abortion ban, only adding to his long record of anti-abortion extremism.
Pence: “I’ll certainly also support efforts to create a threshold of support for the unborn, even at the national level.”
Wolf Blitzer: “Would you support a six week ban nationwide?”
Mike Pence: “Well, of course. Look — I’m pro-life. I don’t apologize for it. I believe that we’ve got to do everything in our power to restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law. And I’d support federal legislation in that regard if I was in the Congress or had any other job here in town.”
And Trump once again bragged about paving the way for Republicans to pass abortion bans across the country. Don’t forget: Trump committed to signing a national abortion ban when he was in office.
Politico: “Former President Donald Trump on Saturday defended his efforts to limit abortion in a video address to the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition.”
“In his remarks, Trump cited his appointment of three justices (Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett) to the U.S. Supreme Court. All three voted in the majority in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that had legalized abortion nationally.”
Trump: “Nobody has ever done more for ‘Right to Life’ than Donald Trump. I put three Supreme Court justices, who all voted, and they got something that they’ve been fighting for for 64 years, or many, many years.”
The Hill: “The Trump administration formally backed a House bill Monday that would ban abortions after 20 weeks. … It would make it a crime to perform or attempt an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, with the possibility of a fine, up to five years in prison or both.”
2024 Republicans are hellbent on ripping away the right to choose from every woman in this country.
Tim Scott: “The people have decided that their elected leaders have the opportunity to do so, so I say absolutely … if I were president of the United States, I would literally sign the most conservative pro-life legislation that they can get through Congress.”
Politico: “Gov. Ron DeSantis late Thursday night signed Florida’s six-week abortion ban into law just hours after the GOP-led Legislature approved it. The legislation will upend Florida’s status as an abortion haven in the south, cutting off access for thousands who would otherwise travel from neighboring states each year for the procedure.”
Newsweek: “Haley described herself as ‘very pro-life’ and has spent most of her political career fighting for anti-abortion legislation, including signing a law as South Carolina governor in 2016 banning the procedure in most circumstances after 19 weeks of pregnancy unless the mother’s life is at risk.”
DC News Now: “Gov. Glenn Youngkin said he was ‘frustrated’ with state Democrats after a swift rejection Thursday of his proposed 15-week ban on abortion.”
Associated Press: “[Gov. Kristi Noem] and South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley released a letter to South Dakota pharmacists saying they are ‘subject to felony prosecution’ if they procure or dispense abortion-inducing drugs. The state bans all abortions except to save the life of the pregnant person.”
