The GOP primary is only getting messier as the Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley teams attack each other while the RNC shields Trump from his role in Republicans’ disastrous performance in the 2022 midterm elections. At the same time, more 2024 Republicans are backing extreme proposals like a national abortion ban as they scramble to out-MAGA each other and win over the fringes of the GOP base.
DeSantis and Haley took their feud to new heights as they traded swipes yesterday.
Florida Politics: “Never Back Down is down on Nikki Haley pitching Disney to consider relocating to South Carolina. A new six-figure digital ad buy slams ‘Mickey Haley’ in the wake of the former Palmetto State Governor’s pitch to the company, made Wednesday on Fox News, to move to the state given ongoing conflicts with Ron DeSantis’ Florida.”
Florida Politics: “‘If Disney would like to move their hundreds of thousands of jobs to South Carolina and bring their billions of dollars with them, I’ll let them know,’ Haley said. ‘I’ll be happy to meet them in South Carolina and introduce them to the Governor and the Legislature. They would welcome it.’”
While these extreme 2024 presidential hopefuls battle it out, the RNC is carrying water for Donald Trump in their latest autopsy report — where Trump’s role in the midterms is conveniently nowhere to be found.
Washington Post: “GOP study on poor 2022 election showing doesn’t mention Trump”
Washington Post: “A draft Republican Party autopsy report on the 2022 midterm elections examining why the GOP failed to win the U.S. Senate and posted smaller-than-expected gains in the House does not mention Donald Trump or his role as the de facto leader of the party, according to people familiar with its contents.”
Let’s not forget that GOP presidential hopefuls are falling over one another to endorse one of the key litmus tests of their primary: a national abortion ban.
The Hill: “Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley called for a national consensus on the issue of abortion on Tuesday during an address from the headquarters of the influential anti-abortion group SBA List Pro-Life America.”
MSNBC: “Is six weeks the right mile marker?”
Tim Scott: “The people have decided that their elected leaders have the opportunity to do so, so I say absolutely … If I were president of the United States, I would literally sign the most conservative pro-life legislation that they can get through Congress.”
USA Today: “Hutchinson would support ‘a national standard’ on abortion”
Wolf Blitzer: “Would you support a six week ban nationwide?”
Mike Pence: “Well, of course. Look — I’m pro-life. I don’t apologize for it. I believe that we’ve got to do everything in our power to restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law. And I’d support federal legislation in that regard if I was in the Congress or had any other job here in town.”
