Following the New York Times’ reporting on Donald Trump’s taxes, Democrats across the battlegrounds slammed Trump for breaking his promises to working families — prioritizing the interests of the wealthy and well-connected like himself at the expense of working families, just like he did with the Republican tax scam.  See for yourself:

In Arizona:

Arizona Democratic Party Chair Felecia Rotellini: “Donald Trump seems to think he can play by a different set of rules than the rest of Americans. While Arizona’s hard-working teachers, nurses, and firefighters were paying their fair share, Trump exploited loopholes to pay just $750 in federal income taxes — while pushing through a tax scam that overwhelmingly benefited the wealthy and well-connected like himself. Arizonans are ready for leaders like Joe Biden and Kamala Harris who will play by the rules and stand up to special interests — because they know public service is about serving the American people, not ripping them off.”

In Florida:

Florida Democratic Party Chair Terrie Rizzo: “This report makes clear once again that Donald Trump’s motto has always been: Trump first, Americans last. While Trump raised taxes on millions of middle class families and gave a massive handout to his Mar-a-Lago crowd, he paid just $750 in his first year in office. Trump is a self-proclaimed ‘billionaire,’ but paid less in taxes than most Floridians, including those working hard on the frontlines during this pandemic. Floridians deserve a president of integrity who is focused on serving the people, not himself — and that’s what we’re going to get when we elect Joe Biden in November.”

In Georgia:

William Harris, Democratic Candidate for House District 73: “Make no mistake — Trump avoided paying his share while veterans go homeless and children go hungry. The average American pays more than $8,000 a year in federal taxes while Trump pays $750. He benefits from our domestic tranquility, our common defense, our general welfare, and the blessings of our liberties without contributing to them.”

Joyce Barlow, Democratic Candidate for House District 151: “While Donald Trump gets away with paying $750 in taxes, the people of my district lack basic access to health care and the resources to provide for their families during this pandemic. Coronavirus hit Southwest Georgia with a resounding punch, and even while we recover, we are on the brink of another rural hospital shuttering.”

In Michigan:

Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes: “If you work for a living, odds are you pay more in taxes than Donald Trump. Michigan teachers, nurses, and autoworkers contribute more to the federal government than our president. And Trump is no different than the wealthy and well-connected friends he enriched with his GOP tax scam that handed out tax cuts to big corporations and the rich while leaving everyday Michiganders behind. We need a president who will stand up to these special interests and ensure people like Donald Trump pay their fair share while helping working people. That president will be Joe Biden.”

In Nevada:

Nevada State Democratic Party Chair William McCurdy II: “This report makes clear why Trump tried so hard to hide so much. As Nevada families were working hard and playing by the rules, Trump was exploiting loopholes to get out of paying his fair share. It’s no surprise that Trump pushed through a GOP tax scam that handed out massive giveaways to large corporations and further enriched the wealthy and well-connected like himself, all while hiking taxes on Nevada’s hardworking families. Nevadans deserve leaders who will look out for them instead of looking down on them, and help them get ahead instead of leaving them behind. That’s why we’ll elect Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Democrats up and down the ballot this fall.”

In New Hampshire:

New Hampshire Democratic Party: “Hardworking Granite State families are paying more in federal income taxes than the president of the United States. And as Trump enjoys his lavish lifestyle, his tax scam and his scheme to overturn the ACA hurts NH workers and families.”

In North Carolina:

North Carolina Democratic Party Chair Wayne Goodwin: “Last night’s report shows what many of us have suspected for years as we’ve heard Donald Trump’s ridiculous excuses for not releasing his tax returns. Not only is Trump massively indebted to shady, mysterious creditors, but he’s also used every trick in the book to find tax loopholes to avoid paying his fair share. That working North Carolinians — including firefighters, teachers and nurses — have been paying much more than Donald Trump in federal income tax should outrage us all. If he gets a second term, Trump will continue to rig the system for people like himself and his family while the rest of us are left behind.”

In Ohio:

Ohio Democratic Party Chair David Pepper: “Donald Trump promised that Ohioans’ taxes would go ‘way down’ under his presidency. But instead of lending a hand, he passed a tax scam that will hike taxes on 1.6 million hard-working Ohioans. Instead of keeping his promises to working families, he handed out massive corporate tax breaks that pushed Ohioans’ jobs overseas. And instead of paying his own fair share of taxes, he did what he always does: he refused to live up to his most basic commitments. Ohioans are tired of paying the price for Trump’s broken promises, and this November we’re replacing him with a president who keeps his word — that leader is Joe Biden.

In Pennsylvania:

Pennsylvania Democratic Party Spokesperson Andres Anzola: “Donald Trump’s failed businesses are losing millions — yet he pays less in taxes than working families in every part of our commonwealth. And instead of delivering real tax relief for Pennsylvanians, his 2017 tax giveaway just carved out more loopholes so that he and his wealthy donors can get their tax bills even lower, while working families will have to pay more to the government by 2027. We need a president who will actually give a damn about Pennsylvania’s working families and union jobs — the clear choice is Joe Biden.”

In Texas:

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa: “Trump only paid $750 in federal income taxes in 2016, and nothing in 10 of the prior 15 years. He cheated our tax system to not end up in jail or pay his fair share. Almost every American—including essential workers, nurses, teachers, students, undocmented immigrants, and veterans—paid more in taxes than Donald Trump.”

In Virginia:

Democratic Party of Virginia Chair Susan Swecker: “Yesterday’s New York Times story reveals what Virginians already knew — that Donald Trump cares more about Wall Street than he does Main Street. Virginians across the Commonwealth work hard and labor over paperwork to pay their federal income taxes, while year after year, they pay more in taxes than the self-proclaimed ‘billionaire’ in the White House did. And instead of delivering real middle class tax relief, Trump’s 2017 tax bill just created more loopholes so that he and his wealthy donors could pay even less in taxes, while taxes on working Virginians are set to rise in 2027. It’s time we have a leader like Joe Biden who understands the value of hard work, getting paid a decent wage, and contributing your fair share.”

In Wisconsin:

Democratic Party of Wisconsin: “While passing a tax scam that sent American jobs overseas and pursuing a chaotic trade war that destroyed markets for Wisconsin farmers and manufacturers, Trump himself was allegedly paying only $750 in taxes. What an insult to the hardworking Wisconsinites he promised to work for – many of whom paid more in federal income taxes than he did. We’ll hold him accountable for his failure of leadership this November 3rd.”
